planning

Days Casper has no school that I am pretty sure both of us work, between now and Christmas:
Oct 9
Oct 12 (may be a holiday for mr. flea)
Oct 30 (possible furlough day 1 for me)
Nov 25 (possible furlough day 2 for me)
Dec 21, 22, 23, 24 (24 is possible furlough day 3 for me, and I am pretty sure is a holiday for mr. flea)

I am working 3 weekends this semester, so I'll have 3 days of flex time. The YMCA may cover the October dates - I know they do spring break. We find out about the furloughs tomorrow. Advance leakage has given me a pretty good guess as to when they are.

Times we might take family trips this fall:
Sept. 5-7
Oct 10-12
Oct 30-Nov 1
Nov 25-29
Dec 23-Jan 1 (to Ohio)

Possible destinations (probably in order of the above):
Hendersonville NC
Asheville NC/Smokies Park (to meet up with old friends from Cinti)
Chattanooga TN (Why? Because it's there, and close? I have no idea if it's worth visiting.)
Charleston SC
plus day trips to Atlanta, weekend runs to Auburn AL.

My family used to own a cabin in Hendersonville. Beautiful place! My parents live in Charleston and I've always loved it there. I'm jealous of your trips, lady!

I'd vote for Charleston, but I'm not traveling with kids. Chattanooga has a really good aquarium (I've heard). There's the Redneck Riviera (just not during any long college vacations). Huntsville (AL) has a space park I remember really enjoying as a non-sciencey child, but might be a bit old for your two.

Maybe some sort of a working farm B&B? We used to stay with friend who had a vanity farm when I was little, and the feeding/chasing/watching animals part never got old. This place looks nice: http://www.serenbeinn.com. The prices seem reasonable to me, but that may be because I live in Boston. Close to Atlanta!

Chattanooga is worth visiting, I think. I have family there, but I haven't explored it too much. They really like the Aquarium there, and the Chattanooga choo-choo. (but both my boys are obsessed with trains, so that may not be a draw for you). It's a cute little city, and I wish I could've explored it more when we were there last summer.

I love Chattanooga, but your little will need a nice mix of brave (walk through this small rock opening where there isn't room for a parent to be literally at your side) with patient (it is a walk to a beautiful view but it takes awhile).

Ruby Falls and Rock City are fun, the aquarium is the best I have ever seen, the incline railway is just strange, and at least a few years ago there was a tow truck museum where people take tow trucks VERY seriously.
