on a completely different note

Am I nuts for considering buying one of those swimsuits with a little skirt? Not because I am ashamed of my ass - I actually think I have a rather nice ass, although it is admittedly blinding white and somewhat cottage-cheesy - but because I hate shaving my bikini line, but can't bring myself to overcome societal prejudice and just go hairily forth.

So, are swimsuits with skirts always super-duper-dowdy, or could they be cute and charmingly retro or ironic?

I hate being female sometimes.

I have wondered the same thing. Though honestly, since the incident in the changing room at the municipal pool (which involved a child pointing at my post-c-section stomach and asking her mother what had happened to that lady), I have not felt much like going about in public in any swimsuit, skirted or no.

One of my swimsuits has a little skirt! Totally cute and not dowdy at all. From Land's End actually, although they are usually the land of the somewhat dowdy. Like so

Swim skirts came back in for all ladies not just the middle-aged modest a couple of years back.

And they are perfect for when you're not up for taking care of "bikini" area hair biz.

If you can't make the skirt thing work (and really? Of all the hairiness issues, that's not the one I thought would trip you up), there are always the "retro" types, usually with ruching all up the front, that have way low leg-lines (basically, one-piece boyshorts) that might do the trick.

I have a two-piece boyshort-type swimsuit that I wear for this reason. I hate the swimsuit shaving issue. The way women's swimsuits are designed is so unfair!

I think the right skirt could look cute, the trick is that the rest of the suit has to not look dowdy.

I got a tankini with cute shorts a couple years ago for the same reason that you want the skirt. I like it. I'm thinking of getting a skirt one next summer as it turns out having kids means going to pools a lot more often.

Yeah, I'd just go for the swim shorts if I couldn't stomach the skirt...in fact, I think the shorts are way cooler, so I'd probably go for those anyway. :)

I see lots of women in our age bracket wearing the be-skirted swimsuits. I think it depends on the style as to whether it looks dowdy or cute.

The boy-short type bottom (or one-piece with a boy-short-cut leg) is a good option, too, and IIRC, you have long legs, which that cut looks cute on (if you care about that).

Does Lands End still have swimsuits with 3 (or more) different cuts for the legs (high, medium, low)? That's a good place to look, if they do.

I third or fourth the skirt-suit from Land's End rec. I have several and I love them.

I think you are far from the land of Nordstroms but they usually have cute suits, too.

If you can't bring yourself to do a skirt, and you (like me) find the boyshort swimsuits amazingly revealing for something that seems like it shouldn't be.... consider a board short. Even young 'uns wear them sometimes out here in Southern California- they are considered "sporty".

I love my board shorts, and am seriously mourning the fact that their velcro is beginning to go.

Oh, and they are super flattering for post-partum tummies. Check out Title Nine- they sometimes have some. I got mine at a local surf shop.
