our house on the map (or rather, not)

For house people, the Sanborn fire insurance maps are great. Here's Athens in 1918:

Our house isn't there, which is not a surprise since we were told it was built in either 1920 or 1928. But it's fun to go back (Athens goes back to 1885) and see which houses in our neighborhood appear when.

I managed to lose track of time on these AGAIN last night, only mananging to crawl to bed after refreshing my memory about the house having its current footprint in the 1917 map. I need to see if there is a way to overlay it with the 1905 one to figure out which parts came first.

PS, your library probably has access to the site I use, which includes later dates.

Nope, we don't subscribe to Digital Sanborn - we just have the public domain stuff we scanned. I think we probably have print copies, though, in the Map Library.

That's a shame! Does the city library have it? (That's where my access comes from. I am sadly addicted to it.)
