gender-based fashion question

Why is it that stripes and plaid are gender-neutral, but polka-dots are uniformly feminine? Is there anything particularly female about dots? I mean, they are round - is that all it takes to be off-limit for male clothes (except, I guess, neckties)?

They look really stupid on men, just like tiny hearts and teddy bears and bunnies and all that other stuff chicks like to wear would. Also, it's a survival issue. No man is going to make it easy for his enemies by wearing bulls eyes.

They are cute. As DX notes, men try to avoid cute (unless it involves pirate gear).
