What Was That Book turns into Get Offa My Lawn

I finally subscribed to the LJ community What Was That Book? The other day. Cool concept, I'm struck by how ace commenters are at finding things...

But I think I have to unsubscribe, since half the queries seem to be for obvious classics of children's (or adult) literature - not genuinely hard to find or obscure things, which okay, perhaps that's part of the joy of the community, but I was looking for lower volume, more gems. But also, does every other post have to begin, "I read this when I was in second grade, in the mid 1990s..." I am beginning to feel positively geriatric!

(shakes cane. turns 35 in 2 weeks.)

Is STUMPERS-L still around? It's a similar concept, only email, and I found it had a much higher signal-to-noise ratio, since it was usually professionals passing on a patron query that they couldn't find themselves.

(The only stumper during my 1.5 tenure on the list that I knew off the top of my head was a Ray Bradbury short story; but those librarians were total aces at chasing down rare children's works.)

Alternately, I need to introduce you to [livejournal.com profile] snacky, who is the absolute queen of the obscure children's book. Also, she described to me what happened in the three sequels to Flowers in the Attic one time. Okay, don't hold that against her.

Honey, I read one of the sequels to Flowers in the Attic. In my defense, I was 13.

I was mistaken for my mom's sister today. Talk about making you feel old. I mean, she's not old, and she does look fabulous, but still! She's 25 years older than me!

Oh honey, you have no idea how much of that lies ahead of you. Just wait until the long-time friends start dying....
