Curse of the Were-Rabbit
We took Casper with us to see this last night, and I think it was the right choice. She's only 25 months old, but she has a prodigious attention span and will happily sit through a movie on the computer - she's seen Wee Bugs (A Bug's Life), Cowboy (Toy Story) and Cowboy with Jessie (Toy Story 2, which happens to make me cry like a baby - she looooves Jessie). I hadn't counted on the ridiculous length of the pre-show: 5 coming attractions plus a short about penguins took 25 minutes to get through before the actual, you know, movie started. She climbed onto my lap saying "I'm scared" at the yappy dog in the penguin short, and sat there for the whole movie but wasn't too wiggly. She liked the rabbits, and once the Were-Rabbit was introduced she said, as each scene started, "Where's that big rabbit?" She was a little scared in parts, especially at the end, but not badly I think. She definitely was confused by the complexity of the story. My favorite comment she made was "What's going to happen?" during one of the early chase scenes. Her talking was quiet enough that mr. flea couldn't hear it, and the whole theater was full of kids, so I think that was okay.
And the movie? I enjoyed it, but I found that I was so focussed on the experience of having Casper in my lap and trying to help her understand and worrying she was confused or scared that I didn't appreciate it as fully as I might have. mr. flea loved it.
I other Casper news:
She is a genius.
She has named my teddy bear "Funky." (His real name is Bunky. Damned teddy-bear-poaching kid.)
Rainy days make her cranky.
She's now sleeping on the futon in her bedroom most nights (the "big girl bed") but the bedtime ritual has gotten very extended and it is often 9:30 before she is finally quiet. She doesn't want to read books at story time (8) and would rather keep playing, and mid-book will announce, "Bye bye, see you later!" or "Have a good weekend!" and flee creepingly and slowly. Once put in bed (begging "sweep wif me!") she will often get up and peek her head out the door (she can open it now, argh) and call very very cutely and plaintively. Once in bed she sleeps past 5, though. I think we need to 1. enforce getting up for the day at 7 (mr. flea will need to do this, and it will be a challenge for him, since he does not like to get up at 7) and 2. reduce the nappage (which, when we are on the usual nanny schedule works anyway - she usually gets 1.5 hours, due to picking up A from school).
