say anything

I saw this movie once, a long time ago, and while I remembered a lot of it, and many of the details are generationally imprinted (You Must Chill, Joe Lies, etc.) it was really interesting to rewatch at this vintage. Saturday night we watched the film itself, and Sunday we watched it again with commentary from Crowe, Cusack, and Skye.

1. They are so young! Cusack is the one you notice - what a baby face! - though I guess he was 22/23 when it was filmed. Ione Skye was only 18, but since I haven't seen her more lately, it didn't strike me as much.

2. They are so aborable! Well, I sat there saying, "He's so adorable!" and mr. flea sat there going, "She's so adorable," so I guess they had us covered. Still. John Cusack. Baby face. Little mouth. Gah.

3. It's a really good movie. Execllent acting from the 3 main charaters. The kids, especially, are so open and transparent and wonderful, and John Mahoney is of course an old pro. Well written, a film about real emotions and real life. And cool dialogue. Everything is good - the party scene, Lloyd's girlfriends, the Cory-Joe thing, Lloyd's nephew and sister.

4. So. Fucking. Romantic. Is there anything like the first time you fall in love and you're vulnerable and open and brave and confused and headstrong and everything all at once? It made me all gooshy inside. And nostalgic for the six heady months when mr. flea and I first fell in love. Listening to Skye and Cusack talk, a little gingerly, about their real chemistry was interesting. One of them (or maybe Crowe?) said something about how circumstances were such that they didn't fall in love in real life, but their on-screen affair was perhaps more satisfying.

5. I think what really makes Lloyd, and thus the film, is the tension between Cusack and Crowe - Crowe pushing the softer side and the eternal optimist and Cusack bringing the anger and darkness and masculinity.

Still gooshy. Maybe we should schedule regular rewatches. Very good for one's relationship.

I could have sworn I've seen this, but according to IMDB, it doesn't sound familiar.
