Shirley Jackson, Life Among the Savages.

re-read, Jennifer Crusie, Bet Me.

Re-entry is a bitch even when the vacation wasn't that fantastic. Grumpf.

Hear, hear.

How was "Life among the Savages"? Sounds like a winner, judging from the title alone.

It's "momoir," 1950's version - humorous sketches of domestic life originally published in women's magazines, tied together and polished up to make a book. She's rather droll and very handy with words - I especially like her account of labor with her 3rd child - but it is rather of its time - lamenting her poor housekeeping and being bewildered by children and husband and so forth. I have a stack of Shirley Jackson I'm working through, so I was going to do a longer post on everything when I'm done. Which I'm afraid may not be soon - I've been distracted and am in the middle of several other things right now.

I ADORE Life among the Savages. Raising Demons continues their adventures, which were somewhat modeled on Jackson's real children.
