Machias ME

My mother drove up to Machias, where we lived from 1978-1982, with my brother, who's doing a summer class in marine biology, and she hung out overnight with some people we knew when we lived there. And it turns out that our house is currently for sale! http://www.realtor.com/Prop/1045326472

Freaky. It was yellow when we lived there, and I think had more trees, though these photos were taken in winter so it's hard to tell. The kitchen is completely different, and I think they've changed the sun porch, too, but the staircase is exactly the same. Big big ol' house. Nice house. Right in town. Only 6 hours from Boston, but there's probably a movie theater nearer than Ellsworth these days, and in this era of Netflix it hardly even matters! If you climb the hill in the woods out back you come to the blueberry barrens of the U of Maine campus, and can poach at your leisure. It was a great place to be a kid.

Huh. One of my friends at school is from Machias, actually. She's also related to Laura Ingalls Wilder somehow. I'm not sure what that means, other than, small world.

...wait a minute. I think the real estate agent is related to my friend-- same last name.

*Small* world.

What a neat house. Great staircase. Also, 6 bedrooms for under $300K.

All I remember about that house's layout is the stiarcase, specifically the bannister. Everything else is outside memories. We moved away when I was 6, and I haven't seen it since.
