Birdie (and Bridie) are both historical names, the former apparently derived from Bertha and the latter Irish. Then there's Lady Bird Johnson, whose birth name was Claudia - she got nicknamed as a baby for being "purty as a lady bird" (what I would call a ladybug). But, especially given Lake, this is more like "River" "Rowan" "Thorn" "Oak" etc. The funny thing to me is the parents didn't seem like hippies at all - they were pretty standard Southern preppy.
