Well, obviously I can't speak to your family traditions.

I can tell you that we have someone in our family who is even more...um, well, we think it's a big improvement over her past behavior that at age 37 she's back to mooching off her parents, let's just put it that way. Now if she'd knock off the passive-aggressive e-mails and the lying and the...oh, I'm going to stop now, I'll get angry if I think about it any more, and I'd rather clean my dining room, she's not worth the mental energy.

Anyhow, my point is, I know from toxic relatives, and truly, there does come a point at which it's better to decide to clean your dining room. Or just send a card. Or whatever.
