Five month old report

The Dillo is at a very charming age; it was a wonderful time for Grandma to visit. He has some spiffy new clothes and shoes that make him look like a big boy!

Physical: Very fat thighs. Fat knees! Not much cradle cap anymore. Hair is brown, has a widow's peak, rubbed off on the back from sleeping. No teeth, and none imminent. Looks like Casper at that age more and more, but with a rounder face. So soft and yummy.

Tricks: Getting better at sitting - we sit him in the hole in the Boppy and this is safe enough with careful watching. He tends not to clonk to the side (as Casper did) but to slump forwards. Rolls both ways and somehow does get around the blanket placed on the floor while on his back. I doubt much intentionality. Can pick up toys and mouth them very successfully. Extremely adept with the paci. Sucks fingers or thumb indiscriminately. Coos, shrieks, growls, but none as much as he did several weeks ago.

Eating: Still exclusively breastfed. Grandma gave him a piece of toast to lick on Sunday, and I let him play with a mashed grain of brown rice on his tongue (ejected!), so we are starting to explore food as a texture/plaything. He has the head control for spoon feeding I think but not a lot of interest yet. I expect we'll start giving him some cereral and first mashy foods this month, but I'm not in a big rush. I do worry about keeping up with him when he's at day care all day starting in January - it's hard to pump enough for big babies! Still our spit-up boy.

Sleeping: He sleeps in our bed. Bedtime routine starts at 7, involves change into jammies, read Brown Bear, lie next to him as he falls asleep, with an arm around him or a hand on the chest as necessary. He usually has nursed at 6 or 6:30, so we don't usually nurse to sleep. Often wakes at 11 for a nursing, but can go until 2 on occasion. Often up and very restless at 3 - I nurse him but that doesn't put him back to sleep. I think he's a little gassy at this hour. Up for the day at 5:30 or 6 almost all the time. Between him and Casper I generally get one 4-hour chunk of sleep, plus a couple hours on each side.

He is such a complaisant fellow - can be hauled around all day (like the Baby Bjorn - to suck on) and will adapt to irregular napping or pretty much anything we throw at him. Glows at attention but tolerates being lost in bustle pretty well. Seems to be doing just fine at day care - eats, naps for them, mr. flea reports that he seems to like to look around the room and is stimulated by the new stuff. Tomorrow a longer day for him - 9-1:30, which will be the rotuine through the end of the year.
