women's basketball pool results
Well, neither Casper nor I won nor lost, sadly. The winner had 111 points; I was 3rd with 93. Casper was tied for last for a long time, except then her choice to win it all went to the championship game, so she ended up with 45 points to the loser's 29. None of the 14 brackets picked Maryland to win.
In my pervious post I didn't mention two of the more creative picking strategies:
"SYLVANUS ADOLPHUS - in honor of the impending completion of [my friend's] dissertation, this bracket is named for two young men who attended denominational colleges in the antebellum South - Sylvanus Landrum of Mercer University and Adolphus Mangum of Randolph-Macon College. The picks reflect numerous factors, including the young men's evangelical leanings, their native states, and the extent of the United States at the time they lived. Adolphus of North Carolina wrote a more interesting diary, so his state university prevails over Sylvanus's in the final match-up."
"[My friend's cousin] joins us from Durham, North Carolina. [He] has provided the following summary of his methodology:
- Carolina wins. Duh.
- Duke doesn't.
- Teams with fun names of mascots win (Bowling Green, Golden Gophers, "LaTech")
- Teams I might have seen once win.
- Universities founded by televangelists (Oral Roberts, Liberty) always lose."
Unfortunately, both of these brackets were middle of the pack.
