Apropos of spelling challenges, I am recalling the Speak 'n' Spell we had as children, and how it taught me the counterintuitive spelling of 'surgeon' (though it did not teach 'suture', which I learned by misspelling it in an assignment in 9th grade). Mostly, about how that Speak 'n' Spell died a slow and wonderful death, letter by letter descending into madness as it gamely tried to spell 'surgeon' with noises like PLXT and SQUIRK.

(Actually in thinking about our childhood toys, I realize how many of them were covert teaching aids. I was so disappointed in the big 2000s revision of Trivial Pursuit, because compared to the version we'd had as kids, the questions were all so damn easy.)

If Dillo ends up inheriting his father's hands, he will be great for piano someday. Also, everybody loves a pianist. (And a piano! Don't I wish I had a good reason to own one.)
